As I have browsed online articles, and scrolled through my Facebook news-feed over the past few days, I couldn’t help but notice an overwhelming sense of fear, anxiety, frustration, anger and in some cases, hopelessness, reflected back at me.  Tensions are high right now.

Transitions are hard.  It’s especially hard, if you aren’t a fan of the changes unfolding around you.

As I was thinking about this, a scripture popped into my mind.  John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Interestingly, these are the words that Jesus spoke to his disciples to prepare them for an upcoming life transition.  Jesus tells his disciples that he will soon be leaving them to be with the Father.  He was of course, alluding to his impending crucifixion.

The world that the disciples had known for the past three years would be coming to an end.  Their teacher and dear friend, Jesus, would no longer be leading them on earth.  But he promised that he wouldn’t abandon them or leave them as orphans.

In John 14:26 he says: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”   

Just as Jesus spoke comfort to his disciples long ago, He continues to speak to his followers today.  He offers us his peace in trying times.  He encourages us to not allow our hearts to be troubled. Why?  Because, through the power of the Holy Spirit, He is with us.

He knows.  He sees.  He understands.  He cares more than we can even begin to comprehend.  And He offers us peace in exchange for our worry, anxiety, fear, and hopelessness.

The question is, will we accept it?

“Lord I pray that we can turn to you in times of trouble and confusion.  Help us to rest in the love and peace that you provide.  As we navigate the many transitions that we face in this life, please guide us by your Holy Spirit.  Help us to trust in YOU above all else.  In Jesus name, Amen.”
